Pool Coping – Travertine and Marble

Travertine and Marble Pool Coping

Many homeowners after a long winter are looking to stretch their legs and finally find some time to enjoy the outdoors. Whether your house plays host to guests or you are just looking for a relaxing exterior atmosphere it is important to consider the most viable options for your new or improved living space. If you are in the market to build a new pool or improve and existing one there is only one material that is going to offer you every advantage for the money you spend; travertine pool coping. Travertine pool coping has slowly become more and more popular to line pools with across the country for its natural benefits. These benefits offer many protective as well as luxury options not to mention being a natural and durable stone. Here are a few reasons why Travertine Pool Coping is the smartest way to go for your pool.

Naturally cool to the touch
Travertine and subsequently travertine pool coping always stays cool to the touch in direct sunlight. It is sometimes an overlooked nuance when designing your exterior living area. When some types of stone are in direct sunlight there temperatures can exceed 130 degrees which can be unbearable to walk or sit on. You will never have this problem with Travertine Pool Coping and whenever you want to walk on your stone it will always be soft and soothing without fear of burning your feet.

Off-Season Protection
All premium grade travertine pool coping is subjected to a rigorous freeze and thaw process to ensure the stone will not crack or break under some of the colder temperatures that can be found in the United States. This ensures protection all season long to keep your maintenance costs down and keeps your pool looking as new as the day it was installed. Even through heavy temperature changes throughout the seasons travertine pool coping is durable and able to withstand these harsh fluctuations.

Non Slippery when wet
One of the benefits of a tumbled travertine pool coping is that it is not slippery even when wet. The texture and slight pitting of the material offer a stable surface to walk on without fear of falling or injuring yourself. This has made it very popular with hotels for liability reasons as other products while dry may be ok but once are wet become very slick and dangerous to walk on.

Travertine pool coping is offered in various sizes, the most common are 12” x 24” x 1 ¼” or 12” x 24” x 2”. All travertine pool coping can be found in any of our Travertine colors. Custom travertine pool coping is also available and can be ordered. If you have a larger pool without any freeform shapes we also offer Treads at 12” x 72” x 2” in specific Travertine colors. If you are looking to build or redo your outdoor pool then make the smartest and most lasting investment by choosing to go with travertine pool coping.

The French Pattern – Travertine and Marble Pavers

If you have been looking into travertine or marble you have probably come across a distinct pattern layout called the “French Pattern”. The French Pattern in travertine or marble is a combination of four different sized stones, 8” x 8”, 8” x 16”, 16” x 16” and 16” x 24”. The most typical breakdown of the pattern consists of 4 pieces of 8×8, 2 pieces of 8×16, 4 pieces of 16×16 and 2 pieces of 16×24 for a total of 16 sqft.

French Pattern Diagram for Travertine and Marble Pavers

French Pattern travertine or marble is a great choice for any interior or exterior application. The tile thickness (1/2″) or paver thickness (1 ¼”) gives the advantage of installing them for patios, pool decks, walls, balconies, kitchens, foyers, living rooms and beyond. With the stones interlocking together it offers versatility in design, an ability to work within almost any space, and also giving the layout beauty and character. The pattern is designed to offer a different look than the typical geometric shapes commonly associated with travertine or marble installations.

The French Pattern also offers a less expensive option for installation through a “Dry Set” or “Sand Set”, requiring less aggregate material than a “Mud Set” or “Tile Set” and therefore reducing your costs. This pattern is available in both Tile and Pavers. Travertine Tile is offered in a Brushed finish with Chiseled Edges or Tumbled. With Travertine Pavers and Marble Pavers the pattern is offered in a tumbled finish. One of the added benefits when working with the French Pattern in both Tile and Pavers is the importation of the stone already broken down into the proper ratio for you the customer. Travertine Tile comes in sets of 8sqft and Pavers come pre-crated in the French Pattern at 176sqft. The combination of versatility and pre-crated importation allows you the customer to focus only on the amount of square footage needed. There is no need to calculate any ratios for the stone breakdown as we have done this already for you!

Marble Paver Buyer’s Guide

We understand that planning for your new project can be quite overwhelming. With the amount of work that it takes to successfully design and implement we understand the headache it can be. Here at Elegant Tile and Stone, we want to take the burden of material choice off your shoulders. Here is our Buyer’s Guide to Marble Pavers to make sure you know, understand and are receiving what is necessary to make sure you make the right decision the first time.

1) Understand the product you are dealing with. As a natural stone paver no two pieces are alike. They have been developing for thousands of years and Mother Nature has graced them with a unique color variation all to its own. Make sure your installer understands that natural stone needs to be blended in order to truly provide its highest appeal.

2) The market for Marble Pavers can be very intimidating to understand at first glance. While they originally became popular in Florida, New Jersey has quickly caught up and begun mass importation of the stone direct to our ports. Your highest priority is to make sure you are dealing with an importer in the New Jersey area. This immediately allows you to achieve the best pricing as no other merchants have marked the product up and you do not have to pay the ridiculous shipping costs from Florida(which can easily mark the stone up an additional $0.50 to $0.75 cents).

3) Do not purchase any material until you have at least received a sample of it. Do not settle for less than proof of the stones color and quality. Marble is usually associated with a clean and smooth surface and our pavers are nothing short of just that.

4) Make sure you are only dealing with Premium Grade material. While Standard and Commercial grade may be able to save you some money in the short terms the horror stories we have heard have only strengthened our resolve to offer ONLY premium grade material.

5) Choose a color and pattern that best defines your home. Marble is offered in a few colors so make sure you are choosing one that suits your home at the present as well as in the future. Marble Pavers have developed over millennia and will be around much longer than we will. With an important investment like this make sure your choice is the right one and the company you use offers a good variety.

A Finer Alternative to Bluestone: Marble Pavers

 Marble Paver Patio

Elegant Bianco Marble Pavers. Cool to the touch and slip free!

Elegant Tile and Stone has worked with many architects, masons, landscape designers and pool builders across the United States providing thousands of square feet of material. One of the biggest complaints we hear when dealing with a new project is in regards to Bluestone. Bluestone is a natural stone sandstone that typically can be found right here in the United States. The product however offers one disadvantage. When used as a patio or around a pool as a deck the stone in direct sunlight will retain heat. This makes it very difficult (and even painful) to walk on in the months where you would expect to get the most use out of it. Elegant has seen Bluestone reach up to almost 140 degrees Fahrenheit over long periods. For the family that has children or the couple looking to relax by the pool this seems like a difficult challenge to overcome.

Many homeowners like the look of the stone but never thought to ask if they would be able to walk on it after it has been sitting in the sun. You can’t block the sun from your backyard so what can you do? Elegant offers the solution with our line of Marble Pavers as a more elegant and equal cost alternative to any Natural Bluestone paver. Offered in four unique colors the Marble Paver does not retain heat even in direct sunlight in tropical climates, while also passing Freeze/Thaw cycle testing for northern climates. This makes them superior to any Bluestone paver because it allows you to enjoy your investment all year round.

Blue Marble Pavers

Elegant Blue Marble Pavers in French Pattern. The perfect alternative to Bluestone!

Combine their lack of heat retention with their non-slippery surface and you now have a much better investment for your patio or pool deck. But marble isn’t slippery? Well technically this is true but our marble pavers are tumbled. This gives their surface an uneven texture that not only passes Slip Co testing but also makes them LESS slippery when wet! The tumbling process provides minor alterations to the stones surface allowing for more improved traction whether barefoot or in sneakers and shoes. Knowing this you are just one step away from avoiding a huge mistake by using Bluestone pavers for your backyard. Visit our Marble Paver selection to choose what color works best for your home.

The Dangers of Commercial Grade Material

There are hundreds of quarries across the globe mining travertine and marble productsNatural stone pavers are most popularly mined from Turkey, Italy, Spain, China, Iran, Mexico and Peru.  It can be a daunting task when first entering the natural stone industry to understand the differences between these countries and the products they export.  A basic grading system was instituted to help to differentiate the qualities of the natural stone products you can receive from each of these countries.   The lowest quality pavers are referred to as commercial grade and the highest quality are referred to as premium grade.

Most distributors claim to only work with premium grade natural stone products.  The reality is this is not the case.  By offering a cheaper material to meet a price point, distributors are able to boost sales while accepting none of the responsibility for the stone itself.  This appears to be a good deal when discussing price but instead poses many financial risks to customers.  The commercial grade’s lower quality is something Elegant’s customers should know and understand.

Commercial Grade White Travertine

Commercial Grade travertine pavers showing a much more pitted less durable surface. Installing could potentially risk your investment in the Northeast.

Commercial grade stone develops over its life with far more pockets of air or pitts.  These pitted holes when cut and processed at the quarries are then reflected on the pavers.  The quality and nature of the stone become compromised when evaluated by industry standard Freeze/Thaw, Slip Co and PSI Pressure testing.  Unknowing to the customers who purchased the stone, it will eventually require maintenance and replacement.   These further costs will now greatly out price anything a premium grade paver would have originally provided.

The premium grade paver is offered by Elegant in nine brilliant colors.  They have a noticeably cleaner, less pitted surface for a more elegant look.  Every color has passed all three industry standard tests and is perfectly suited for the Northeastern climate.  Offering the pavers at one and a quarter inch thick, Elegant also provides twenty five percent more paver than most other competitors.  Having piece of mind that your investment is of the highest quality is something Elegant prides itself in.

Why Travertine or Marble Pavers?

Travertine and Marble pavers have made the transition to the New Jersey and New York area over the past decade.  Made originally popular in Florida, they offer a beautiful yet durable surface to call your own.  These pavers are most popular indoors or as walkways, patios, decks and pools.  Elegant Tile and Stone is proud to offer these pavers in nine vibrant colors.

Each paver has specific qualities that make them premium grade.   After developing over thousands of years their color will never fade, guaranteeing a long lasting look.  Basic rinsing with water ensures a clean, elegant surface for decades.  As these pavers have a distinct color and surface they do not retain heat and so remain cool to the touch in direct sunlight.  This makes them perfect for exterior applications.  Testing is performed to ensure exterior stability on each color paver to ensure industry standard quality.  Pavers are first required to pass the Slip Co test to make sure the paver has a safe non-skid surface.  The second test is the Freeze/Thaw, which ensures the stone will not crack or break when repeatedly frozen and thawed.  The last test is the PSI Pressure test which evaluates the stones pressure capacity before breaking.  Passing these tests, the paver offers a product with little to no maintenance required if installed properly.  With a brand new look your property has now risen greatly in value based on your investment, leaving you with a worry free design.

Noce Travertine Pavers

The Tri-State area is still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy months after it has passed.  Many homeowners in the New Jersey and New York coastal areas suffered tremendous damage to their property.  Wooden decks and patios were torn from their foundations and houses were crippled under the storms winds.  Those people fortunate enough to only suffer exterior damage still need to overcome the challenge of rebuilding.  With many clients in the area Elegant Tile and Stone sent representatives to survey the damages.  What we found was our travertine and marble pavers were the only installations that did not suffer any damages.  How could this be possible when so much damage happened in many cases right next door?

To answer the question a deeper look into the history of travertine and marble pavers is necessary.  These paver products which originally became popular in the Florida area show insight into their stability and security.  The total number of Florida hurricanes encompasses over 480 tropical or subtropical storms. More storms hit Florida than any other U.S. state, and since 1851 only eighteen hurricane seasons passed without a storm impacting the state.  In the most hurricane affected state in the country travertine and marble pavers stand the test of time and durability.  By offering them at the premium grade level to pass industry standard testing, Elegant has brought these pavers to the Tri-State area.
